Winnipeg Sea Bears star Teddy Allen is in hospital after being assaulted in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday night, with police investigating the incident.
The Canadian Elite Basketball League team confirmed on Monday that the 28-year-old is receiving medical treatment after the assault.
“Teddy Allen, 28, was taken to hospital where he is receiving medical care. Our focus is on Teddy’s health and supporting him and his family,” a team spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the Sea Bears, team officials have visited Allen in hospital and are co-operating fully with the Winnipeg Police Service’s major crimes unit.
Police told CBC News they were aware of the incident and confirmed an investigation is under way, but no further details have been released.
Allen, who is from Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s top players.
He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2023 after helping lead the Sea Bears to the best regular-season record by an expansion team in CEBL history.
