Bears safety Coby Bryant gives update after knee injury at training camp

Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant has spoken publicly for the first time since suffering a knee injury during training camp, thanking fans for their support and promising to return stronger.

Bryant was injured during Monday’s padded practice after a one-on-one drill with tight end Cole Kmet.

According to the Bears, he suffered a hyperextended knee, a bone bruise and a small fracture and the injury is expected to sideline him for eight to 10 weeks.

The timeline means Bryant is likely to miss Chicago’s season opener but could return between Weeks 3 and 5 if his recovery stays on schedule.

Posting on social media, Bryant thanked supporters for their messages following the injury.

“Thank you for all the prayers & love! God makes no mistakes & I’ll be back stronger. Can’t wait to be back out there with my brothers & have a great season! Much love & Bear Down!”

Bryant signed a three-year, $40 million contract with the Bears during the offseason and is expected to play a key role in the team’s defence.

According to the Bears coaching staff, Cam Lewis will take first-team reps at safety while Bryant recovers.

Lewis had been competing for the nickel cornerback role, with Jaylon Jones, rookie Malik Muhammad and Josh Blackwell also expected to compete for defensive snaps during training camp.
