The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Brendan Brisson to a one-year contract as the team prepares for NHL training camp later this month.
The 24-year-old recorded one assist in three games with the New York Rangers last season and also scored 19 goals and registered 37 points in 66 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.
Brisson was selected 29th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2020 NHL Draft and has recorded two goals and nine points across 27 NHL games with Vegas and New York.
The University of Michigan graduate also represented Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, scoring twice in four games as he played alongside current Maple Leafs winger Matthew Knies at the tournament.
Brisson will now compete for a place on Toronto’s roster following a major overhaul of the team’s forward group.
Colton Sissons, Jack Roslovic, Nick Paul, Teddy Blueger, Brandon Duhaime and Zack MacEwen were among Toronto’s free-agent additions, while the Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna first overall in June.
Another potential opening could emerge because of Max Domi’s uncertain status. Domi has been ruled out indefinitely following complications from off-season surgery.
Toronto begins its preseason on September 19 with split-squad games against the Montreal Canadiens.
