Mexico and Argentina have publicly backed Fifa president Gianni Infantino as pressure mounts over the governing body’s leadership following the collapse of a proposed World Cup commercial deal.
According to The Guardian, Mexico’s Football Federation (FMF) broke with Concacaf’s wider position by endorsing Infantino and rejecting any leadership challenge outside Fifa’s established processes.
“The Mexican Football Federation is convinced that football is its fundamental value and that its best defence lies in institutional integrity and respect for the governance and processes that safeguard it,” the FMF said.
“The FMF supports president Infantino’s leadership in continuing to promote the development of football through institutional strengthening,” the federation added.
Argentina’s Football Association (AFA) also voiced support, praising Infantino’s leadership while acknowledging the decision to abandon the controversial proposal.
“That is why it is worth highlighting the acceptance of the errors made in this process and the apology expressed in the heartfelt message displayed to the 211 member associations of Fifa,” the AFA said, according to The Guardian.
The backing comes as Uefa and Concacaf continue to push for governance reforms after the failed World Cup sell-off plan.
Uefa has warned it could boycott Fifa competitions if significant changes are not introduced.
The Confederation of African Football has also reaffirmed its support for Infantino, strengthening his position ahead of next year’s scheduled Fifa presidential election.
