Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has raised serious concerns over Pakistan’s rapidly growing population, stating that every year the increase in Pakistan’s population equals the entire population of New Zealand.
Speaking at the Pakistan Population Summit 2025 in Islamabad, Atta Tarar said that the fast-growing population is creating severe challenges for health, education, employment, and other essential sectors. He stressed that lack of awareness is worsening the situation and making the population issue more complex.
Health, Education and Resources Under Pressure
Atta Tarar highlighted that the rapid population growth is putting immense pressure on national resources.
He added that every segment of society must take responsibility to address the population challenge.
According to the minister, having too many children negatively affects the health of both the mother and the child, while the overall increase slows the country’s economic progress.
Population Growth Now a Threat to Development
The Information Minister said that a balanced population is crucial for sustainable development.
He warned that Pakistan’s population growth is directly linked to the right to life, making it a legislative and social concern.
“We must play our part to safeguard health rights and address the population issue at every level,” he said.
Impact on Economy and Women’s Workforce Participation
Atta Tarar further noted that Pakistan’s growing population is placing a heavy burden on the economy and basic public services.
He pointed out that the rate of working women in Pakistan is lower than in other regions, calling it a serious social issue that requires awareness and long-term planning.
He emphasized the need to establish a dedicated working group to formulate strategies to manage the country’s population growth effectively.
