The Argentine Football Association has reportedly declared July 15 National Teams Day to celebrate its 2026 World Cup semi-final victory over England on that date.

England broke the deadlock in a tense affair in Atlanta with a 55th-minute Anthony Gordon finish in a bid to reach their first World Cup final since 1966. Notably, Argentina struck in the 85th and 92nd minutes to devastate English hearts and claim a 2-1 victory.

For those unversed, the victory came 40 years after Argentina’s World Cup win over England in the contested-quarter final triumph at the 1986 tournament.

Following Argentina’s latest win, regional tensions surrounding the fixture were reignited as some of their players marched publicly to celebrate while holding a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” which reads “The Falklands are Argentine.”

The conflict lasted for 74 days and claimed the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen. On social platform X, fans have been expressing compelling comments with one user writing, “Wow, that is honestly sad we can’t have much to celebrate as a country when you call beating England in a pointless game an achievement you don’t even have in the Falkland Islands.”

Second added, “Argentina really picked the date because it was against England, you just know that if it had been any other team, the holiday discussion would’ve taken a lot longer.”

Argentina was defeated 1-0 by Spain in the 2026 finale while England beat France 6-4 to take third place.
